President's Update

With the first update as president of the MFCA, I am very happy to welcome Shannon Mury, of Richmond County, Cape Breton to our team as the new Executive Director of the MFCA. Shannon brings a wealth of fire service and board level experience to the association and is already off to a great start getting the executive in line!

Our fall board meeting was held 26 Oct 19 at the Prince George Hotel in Halifax. The Prince George is the host hotel for the 17-19 July, 2020 MFCA Atlantic Fire Leadership Conference. The event will take place at Nova Centre in Halifax, which will be an exceptional venue, with additional accommodations available at the Cambridge Suites. The fall meeting’s agenda consisted of several ideas we have developed, along with items brought forth, to enhance the services provided by association and allow us to be the best it can be.

As you are aware, over the last few years we have made vast efforts in being representative of the fire service and have made a move to include junior officers/members as part of the organization. Further to discussions at the 2019 conference, in an effort to move the organization forward, was to consider a name change to reflect our make- up. As a retired member of the air force, I believe in the importance of maintaining tradition and bring meaning to the MFCA's celebratory successes. This organization is 105+ years old and deserves the respect 105+ year’s garners. We will be conducting a small survey in the near future regarding a potential name change to determine if there is a desire to move in that direction. The results of the survey will gauge the membership and if a name change is acceptable, it will be discussed, collectively, as an agenda item at the 2020 business meeting.

I look forward to serving as President of the MFCA and working with the board to demonstrate the importance of fire services and supporting its members.
